XVII - GARDENS - CARMONTELLE - Garden of... - Lot 25 - Coutau-Bégarie
XVII - GARDENS - CARMONTELLE - Garden of Monceau, near Paris belonging to His Serene Highness the Duke of Chartres P., Delafosse, Née and Masquelier, 1779. In-folio, half calf, spine ribbed and decorated. First edition with all plates in black. It is illustrated with 18 engraved plates after the author, that is to say a general plan and 17 engraved plates giving the 17 points of view where the walker could stop. Enriched with a bill of "Laissez entrer dans le jardin", dated June 1810 and signed by the hand of the Count of Fleurieu, then governor of the Tuileries Palace. A true precursor, Carmontelle published this album in response to the virulence of the criticisms that had fallen upon him and his garden. To carry out this enterprise, he had recourse to subscription, the price of such a work being already high. 4 first ff. slightly browned, otherwise very nice set.
