Bertel THORVALDSEN (d'après) The lion of Lucerne. Serpentine group, base plated with white marble (accidents and missing parts on the base). 19th century. H. : 32 cm, L. : 58 cm Designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen, then sculpted in 1820-1821 by Lukas Ahorn, this lion commemorates the officers and hundreds of soldiers of the Swiss Guard Regiment who died in the service of King Louis XVI of France in 1792, when the revolutionaries stormed the Palais des Tuileries in Paris.
