Chased and gilded bronze hammer based on a cast created for - Lot 77
Chased and gilded bronze hammer based on a cast created for Pope Julius III around 1550. The original hammer was used for the ritual opening of the Holy Door in St. Peter's Basilica. The decoration on the gavel presented here is based on the original, with the upper part featuring two atlatls resting on friezes of interlaced geometric medallions. The upper part of the handle features the papal coat of arms on one side and the prophet Moses on the other. The original model is in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, Munich (inv. no. R692). 19th century H.: 35 cm. - L.: 24.5 cm.
