Rare Transylvanian. (Asia Minor) Mid-17th... - Lot 254 - Coutau-Bégarie
Rare Transylvanian. (Asia Minor) Mid-17th century 147 x 110 cm Technical characteristics: velvet, warps, weft and fringes in Wool Accidents, holes, and wear A Large central red brick medallion forming the main field with geometric floral decoration Four Prussian blue spandrels with tarantulas and floral boxes in the shape of stylized diamonds Large Brick border with ivory and yellow gold cartridges inlaid with crabs or turtles Stylized Tres The so-called "Transylvanian" rugs vary in their designs and arrangements, but are instantly identifiable due to their relatively narrow range of colours and themes. Most of the patterns found in this group of carpets are of pure Ottoman origin, but their stylization is increasingly refined, while maintaining its angular appearance. The term"Transylvanian" comes from the fact that the majority of these rugs seem to have been made in Western Anatolia for export to the European market. One of the largest collections of "Transylvanian" carpets is found in the black church of Brasov and has more than 151 pieces woven before the 19th century. Stefano Ionescu divides the carpets into four different groups, the most important of which is composed of the double-niche shape drawings as we have seen, constituting the largest proportion of those found in churches and museums. Their palette is mainly composed of red, blue and yellow with variations in tones and their designs are symmetrical along a vertical axis, although an asymmetrical detail can always be found in each carpet (Stefano Ionescu, Antique Ottoman Rugs in Transylvania, Rome,2006, p. 58). Due to its floral border, the present lot is part of the relatively rare subgroup of the double-niche category. Two examples with similar borders of drawings on an ivory background are cited by Stefano Ionescu (Ionescu,2006, op. cit., cat. 132, p. 135) and another was sold in these rooms on 4 October 2011, lot 226
