Without a frame Brekelenkam represented on several occasions a hermit in a cave, sitting with a vanity still life to his left, with variations (in prayer, dated 1660, St. Petersburg, Hermitage), and holding a book as in our version and with a crucifix -absent ici-(ca. 1650, anonymous sale, London, 11 December 2003 (Sotheby's), No. 137; 1655, anonymous sale, London, 14 April 2011 (Christie's), No. 10), all in dimensions more or less similar to ours.
