Saint Jacques matamore in silver-plated bronze. - Lot 264
Saint Jacques matamore in silver-plated bronze. Tripod base with scalloped ornamentation and small bell support; San Santiago Matamoros inscriptions. Latin America, 19th century H.: 27 cm - D.: 2,343 gr The figure of Saint James Matamoros is very popular in Spain. At the beginning of the 12th century, the holy fisherman apostle was transformed into a valiant knight who came to the aid of the Christian armies against the Moors. He appears in the sky, mounted on a white horse, armed with a sword and unfurling a great standard. This representation obviously traveled to Latin America with Spanish colonization; here, he is depicted trampling a man with Andean features, wearing a Peruvian bonnet; he then becomes Mataindios.
