Romulus and Remus, Europe, circa 1750 Folded fan, the leaf i - Lot 81
Romulus and Remus, Europe, circa 1750 Folded fan, the leaf in skin, mounted in English, and painted with gouache of Romulus and Remus taken in by the shepherd Faustulus, after the work of the Italian painter Carlo Maratta (1625-1713). The she-wolf wanders off to the left. The story heralds the founding of the city of Rome in Italy. The reverse is painted with two figures, dressed in Chinese style, strolling through a garden of peonies and rocks. Mounted in pierced, engraved and painted ivory. In the center, a lover rides Zeus in the guise of an eagle holding a thunderbolt in its talons. The composition evokes the mythological story of Zeus and Ganymede. The sides feature trophies and caryatids, two of which have fish-like bodies. The head features a tiny sculpture in the thickness of the strands. H.t. 28 cm-H.f. 13.2 cm (restorations)
