Apollo and the Muses, France, circa 1750 Folded fan, the ski - Lot 66
Apollo and the Muses, France, circa 1750 Folded fan, the skin sheet lined with paper and painted with gouache. Apollo, holding his lyre and a score, looks at Glory in the guise of a woman, her head girded with laurels and holding a palm and crown, his attributes. The Muses of Music, Painting and Astronomy surround them. In the background, Parnassus is evoked, dominated by the figure of Pegasus, the winged horse. The rich borders are adorned with fountains, birds, musical trophies and flowers. Two side labels evoke the pleasures of a boat ride and family life. Cut, pierced, engraved, gilded and burgundy mother-of-pearl frame decorated with shells and amorous trophies, and three cartels. Two with subjects of loves in a cage, and in the center the joys of the harvest. The reverse is decorated with a damsel weaving a garland of flowers, and a shepherd with his sheep.
