Bacchus and Ariadne, Europe, early 18th century Broken fan in painted ivory, varnished on both sides. The front depicts Bacchus paying his respects to Ariadne. Lovers follow him, one on a chariot holding a vine, others treading grapes. Ariadne is dominated by Hymen brandishing a torch, revealing their impending union. The head is adorned with a fine tortoiseshell plaque. The reverse is painted with large birds, including two roosters, a peacock and waders in a seaside garden where two ships are sailing.
