36. LEMA, Beatriz (Born 1985) Des maux à dire, "Au revoir Elena". Embroidery on cotton canvas for this book published in 2023 by Sarbacane. 34.5x29 cm Beatriz Lema was born in 1985 in La Coruña, Spain. With a degree in Product Design from the University of La Coruña, she joined the ceramics company Sargadelos in 2010, where she developed a range of tableware objects, before turning to comics and illustration in 2013. She carries out commissions for public and private institutions, while developing publishing projects in parallel. In 2017, she was awarded the Banda Deseñada Castelao (La Coruña) prize for her book O Corpo de Cristo ("The Body of Christ"), a 48-page story that forms the basis of a more ambitious project for which she has been welcomed in residence - and published in France in 2023 by Sarbacane Editions, under the title "Des maux à dire". (Text © Sarbacane) This ambitious album blends the traditional technique of embroidery with comics, since all the plates are produced using this artisanal process. A practice that places Beatriz Lema in a whole movement of contemporary art reusing so-called "popular" and traditional arts.
