PART OF A DINNER SERVICE BELONGING JAMES WILLIAM BELLAMY (1788-1874). Compagnie des Indes, China, early 19th century. Porcelain, decorated with a border in imitation of braiding and adorned in the center with the interlaced monogram of James William Bellamy: "JWB" in gold letters surmounted by a closed fist holding three flowers passing through a polychrome and gold wreath, surrounded by a Greek frieze and garlands of flowers held in place by two nails. The shaped pieces are adorned with a natural artichoke-shaped grip, highlighted in blue and gold. Composed of 70 pieces: including 29 dinner plates (10 of later date), 4 soup plates, 14 dessert plates, 6 cake plates, 5 large hexagonal serving dishes, 1 large ravier, 1 deep serving dish, 1 soup tureen, 3 covered vegetable dishes, 1 small terrine, 3 terrine lids, 2 small ramekins. Weathered, but overall good condition. Various sizes. Biography: James William Bellamy was educated at Queen's College, Cambridge, where he obtained a BA in 1812 and an MA in 1815, was ordained deacon in 1813 and priest in 1814, and became rector of St Mary Abchurch from 1816 to 1822, before finishing his career as vicar of Sellindge, Kent, from 1822 until his death. During this period he was also principal of the Merchant Taylors' School from 1819 to 1845, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1834. On August 8, 1815, in London, he married Mary Cherry (1791-1871), daughter of Thomas Cherry, his predecessor as principal of the Merchant Taylors' School. They had 5 children, including Eleanor, grandmother of Violet Tylden.
