Lotus, also known as Horned, the model designed around [1933]. Vase. Plaster. Early edition, mid-1930s. Height: 42.5 cm - Length: 39.5 cm Depth: 16.8 cm Restoration and cleaning; supervised by the Alberto Giacometti Foundation. Important note: This work has been included in the artist's catalog raisonné and referenced in the Alberto Giacometti Database under number AGD 4558 by the Giacometti Foundation. A document from the Giacometti Foundation for the inclusion of this work in the artist's catalog raisonné and its referencing in the Alberto Giacometti Database will be given to the purchaser. Provenance and history : Jean and Violet Henson Collection (1894-1974) (1887-1971). Work most probably received as a gift from Jean-Michel Frank (cf. Jean Henson, A time for réflexion, éditions Somogy, Paris, 1949, page 194). Archives : - A photocopy of an early photograph of the interior of Jean and Violet Henson's estate, featuring our Lotus Vase by Alberto Giacometti, will be given to the purchaser. - Our Lotus Vase by Alberto Giacometti served as a model for the artist Hannah Gluckstein (1895-1978), known as Gluck, for a painting executed at the Hensons' home in 1937 entitled Still Life, which was presented* the same year at The Fine Art Society's London exhibition under catalog number 17. - Our Lotus Vase by Alberto Giacometti is based on a watercolor by Chapman Anderson Sidney Roy (1916-1999), painted at the Henson home in 1969 and depicting the petit salon in 1939 - 1945. This work is part of a suite of 38 watercolors by the artist depicting interior and exterior (garden) views of the Henson villa. - Constance Spry - Flowers in house and garden - Published by J. M. Dent and Sons LTD, London, 1937. Our Lotus Vase by Alberto Giacometti, in a niche inside the Henson villa and receiving a floral composition by the author, featured on an off-text illustration after an original drawing by Rex Whistler. The author received considerable support from Jean and Violet Henson for the publication of this work, which was dedicated to them in the form of a full-page acknowledgement [À mes amis altruistes, généreux et encourageants; Jean et Violet Henson] (To my unselfish, generous and encouraging friends; Jean and Violet Hensen). - Bibliothèque Kandinsky, Centre Georges Pompidou, Musée national d'art moderne, Paris - An identical model is reproduced on a period photograph conserved under number 5003 of the Fonds Félix Marcilhac deposited in this institution as MAR 1-2.
