Balloon Flight, circa 1783 - Lot 96
Balloon Flight, circa 1783 Folded fan, the double sheet of paper engraved and enhanced with gouache. On a powdered gold background, three cartels illustrate the aerostatic event of December 1783 in Paris. In the center, crowds of Parisians admire the flight of Charles and Robert's balloon in front of the Château des Tuileries, with the caption: "Vue du globe enlevé aux Thuilleries le 1er décembre 1783". On the left, the globe lands on the plain of Nesles, with the caption "Le globe descent à Nelle (sic)", and on the right, "Mr Charles remonte dans le globe tout seul", evoking the balloon's second flight under the eyes of the Duc de Chartres, near Isère. Chartres, near l'Isle-Adam, 40 km from Paris. On the reverse: sheet music and verses for two songs: "Les globes séduisants" and "Les modes au globe volant". Mounted in pierced ivory with repeated motif, the plumes carved and engraved with flowers. H.t. 26.5 cm-H.f. 12 cm (cuts, minor restorations, one fold missing) FR2307517883-K
