The "hongs", View of Macau harbor, China, circa 1860 Folded fan, double sheet in gouache-painted paper. On the front, a large scene shows palace terraces on which 60 figures are attending an audience. A horseman has left his white steed in the lower right. All are dressed in silk, with heads cut out and appliquéd. Border animated with symbols of happiness. On the reverse, on a rich silver background decorated with symbols of happiness, two cartels welcome two pheasants among roses. In the center, a view of the famous Praya Grande or Nam Wan bay, and the Compagnie des Indes trading posts. The Guia fortress Guia fortress dominates the bay. Many merchant ships ply its waters, including a steamship with paddlewheels flying a red flag with a white star, probably the flag of Hong Kong. Finely beaded bone frame engraved with garden scenes. The plumes are carved in relief with garden scenes. Gilded metal hanger and tassel. H.t. 30 cm-H.f. 14 cm (accident to one strand, wear, accidents, restorations) In its original black-lacquered bamboo box with gold decoration, the lid painted with scholars in a garden. The interior is painted with a scene featuring a dragon evoking the Moon Festival, an important mid-Autumn celebration.
