Biography: Piotr Konchalovsky (1876-1956) was a major Russian painter known as the leading "Cézannist" in Russia. Born in Sloviansk, Ukraine, he studied at the Moscow School and then at the Moscow Academy of Arts. After a brief stay at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1898, his style fused French and Russian pictorial traditions. He co-founded the avant-garde "Valet de Carreau" group in 1909, where he used his art as a political protest, advocating a return to popular artistic traditions. Although his early works were influenced by Cézanne and Gauguin, his style evolved towards socialist realism. Later, he excelled in still lifes and landscapes, avoiding the social pathos of socialist realism. Konchalovsky continued to work until his death in Moscow on February 2, 1956. Reference: Our drawing was a gift from the artist to Professor Muratov. He was Ksenia Muratova's grandfather. Professor Muratov was a military doctor who helped P. Konchalovsky to be discharged from the army after being slightly wounded in the First World War. Provenance: HDV de Coulommiers, Estate of Professor Xénia Muratova, 12/11/2022, lot no. 65.
