MAKAROFF Ivan Kuzmich (1822-1897), attribué à.
Presumed portrait of the architect Alexander Stepanovich Kaminski (1829-1897), wearing two imperial order plaques, including the Order of St. Anne. Oil on canvas, preserved in its original carved and gilded wood frame with foliage decoration. Good condition, restorations, lining. Sight: H.: 61 cm - W.: 61 cm. Frame: H.: 82 cm - W.: 82 cm. History: Ivan Kuzmich Makarov entered the Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg in 1845, where he studied under painter Alexey Tarasovich Markov (1802-1878). In 1853, with the support of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts and Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna (1819-1876), Makarov traveled abroad, spending most of his time in Rome. During his stay, Makarov distinguished himself with his portraits of women and children. He returned to St. Petersburg in 1855, where he met and befriended architect Joseph Stepanovich Kaminsky (whose portrait by Makarov is on display in Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery). Our portrait is probably a reworking of another portrait the artist painted of his architect friend. Makarov also produced numerous icons and church representations. In particular, he participated in the decoration of Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral.
