Elephant clock in gilt bronze, patina, brass... - Lot 94 - Coutau-Bégarie
Elephant clock in gilt bronze, patina, brass and enamel. Dial signed Thiout à PARIS. France, Napoleon III period Height: 35 cm Width: 22 cm Depth: 40 cm (accidents to the dial) The reign of Emperor Napoleon III was one of opulence and pastiche. Clocks, like all furnishings, imitated or interpreted works of the past to satisfy a demanding and wealthy clientele. Thus, the clock we present appears to be an interpretation of 18th-century elephant clocks, in which exoticism is pushed to the extreme. It is produced in a variety of versions, both gilded and patinated, allowing a play of color and composition. The elephant carries a richly ornamented howdah on its back, on which rests a sultana accompanied by two Moors, one holding an ostrich-feather flabellum, the other a pheasant. The base is rocaille, simulating a rocky mound.
