A Greek-style chest of drawers in molded... - Lot 61 - Coutau-Bégarie
A Greek-style chest of drawers in molded mahogany and mahogany veneer, opening with two drawers without rails, the rounded uprights resting on curved legs. Chased and gilded bronze ornamentation such as pull handles, keyholes and slippers on the four feet. Grey marble top. Height : 88.5 cm - Width : 130.7 cm - Depth : 60 cm (Chips, cracks, old restorations to the marble) Transitional period. Attributed to Jean-François Oeben (1721-1763), master in 1761. This chest of drawers is a variation on the Greek-style chests of drawers with three drawers and two side doors developed by Jean-François Oeben in the early 1760s, notably for Madame de Pompadour at the Château de Ménars or for the Duc de Choiseul at the Choiseul at the Château de Chanteloup. The same type of ormolu scroll shoe is used. Literature : A. Pradère, 'Madame de Pompadour et le goût grec', Connaissance des Arts, December 1989. A.
