Rare Scriban Genois, also known as Trumeau... - Lot 27 - Coutau-Bégarie
Rare Scriban Genois, also known as Trumeau genovese or scribanne curved chest of drawers in butterfly-wing violet wood veneer or Quadrifolio. It opens on the lower part with four drawers in three rows, a flap revealing eight drawers, four pigeonholes and a small central leaf lined with a mirror. On the upper part, two pulls hold a candelabra, and two sinuous glass doors open onto drawers and pigeonholes. Pull handles and lock escutcheons in chased and gilded bonze. The curves of our Scribanne commode are quite exceptional for this type of Genoese production from the second half of the 18th century, mainly between 1760 and 1770. In addition, the quality of the veneer and, above all, the extraordinary butterfly-wing effect are truly remarkable. The high quality of this piece of furniture allows us to attribute it to Gaetano Bertora (Genoa (?) - 1768). Height 238 cm - Width 128.6 cm - Depth 56 cm Genoa, circa 1765. Provenance : Collection of actress Jany Holt ( 1909 - 2005) Bibbiography : Alvar Gonzalez-Palacio ; Il Mobile in Liguria. P. 256-257, fig 297,298,299. A similar model sold at Wannenes art auction in 2013 from the collection of Jack Clerici for 173600
