Allegory of the Four Elements Trapani, Sicily, first half of the 18th century Carved ivory high relief in a metal and gilded wood frame H. Total 24 cm. -- L.: 15.8 cm. This presentation of a finely carved ivory high relief in a gilded wood medallion, and the ample, pictorial style of the scene, are typical of the productions of southern Italy, and more precisely of the workshops of Trapani, known primarily for their work in metal and gilded wood. Trapani workshops, renowned for their coral work. A crowned woman in a dynamic pose holds the sun, i.e. Fire, in her left hand, and Earth, the second of the Four Elements, in her right. Elements. Water is personified by the sea animal standing behind her, and Air is evoked by the action of the wind on clouds and tree foliage.
