Polychrome painted enamel medallion with gold highlights dep - Lot 79
Polychrome painted enamel medallion with gold highlights depicting the Crucifixion; foundry counter-email with crowned JP mark. Limoges, Jean II Penicaud (circa 1515 - before 1588), mid-16th century D. 10 cm (accidents) The counter-enamel bears the Penicaud family mark, found on a number of Jean I, Jean II and Jean III plates. The technique of Jean I, who worked with translucent enamels on silver pebbles, is not the same as on our plate. John III himself only worked in grisaille. Some polychrome plaques are attributed to Jean II, notably the one in the Musée du Louvre (inv. OA 2524) depicting the Crucifixion (fig.), whose composition is very close to our own. On both plates, the figure of Mary is identical, with her hands crossed over her heart. Book consulted: I. Biron, Emaux sur métal du IXe au XIXe siècle: Histoire, technique et matériaux, Faton, 2015
