Virgin and Child in boxwood carved in the round with slight - Lot 3
Virgin and Child in boxwood carved in the round with slight traces of polychromy. Standing upright and heavily haunched, Mary carries her Son seated on her left side. She supports him with her left hand and places her right hand on his knee in a gesture of tenderness. She is dressed in a robe and mantle, one side of which returns to the front, forming soft folds and vertical pleats broken at the bottom. Her right knee protrudes between two rows of folds. She wears a short veil on which rests a crown. The Child, wearing a tunic, is also crowned. Ile de France, or Champagne, late 13th / early 14th century 14th century H. 33.5 cm (small chips, accidents and restorations) Carved from a large piece of boxwood, this Virgin belongs to a corpus of comparable Virgins, including the one in the Wyverne collection (inv. N° 0920) (fig). The posture and crossing of the eyes are very similar. The feeling of protection and tenderness emanating from the positioning of the Virgin's hands is depicted with the same calm strength. Book consulted: Paul Williamson, The Wyvern collection - Medieval and Renaissance Sculpture and Metalwork, cat 61, p117
