Small female statuette with a curled up body,... - Lot 363 - Coutau-Bégarie
Small female statuette with a curled up body, presenting a face with an angular, almost triangular jaw, topped by a beautiful sophisticated headdress made up of rows of braids. Denise Paulme wrote about this type of statue: "The role of sculptor, in Kissi country, is assigned to members of a specific caste; these men are considered to be sorcerers and play an important role in the external ceremonies of the cult. When a member of the village dies, the artisan carves a statuette in the image, more or less resembling the dead man, and buries it in a corner of the bush. Some time later, he informs the family of the dead man that the pomdo - that is the name of the statuette - is coming out of the ground and asks for an offering. This remarkably fine example among the known corpus would thus embody a deceased ancestor belonging to a dignitary caste, as attested by the ornament of her headdress. H. 12 cm
