Pair of polychrome painted enamel plates... - Lot 70 - Coutau-Bégarie
Pair of polychrome painted enamel plates representing the months of February and December, wing with interlacing mermaids and masks of men and women; reverse side decorated with cut leather, cherubs' heads, laurel frieze, fruits and a female profile for one of emperor for the other in a medallion. Limoges, Reymond workshop, circa 1590 (wear and small restorations) These plates follow the graphic model of the first suite of the months of the year by Etienne Delaune prior to 1566 (Vatican Library, Cicognara IV 2108, 1st floor). A plate from the same series is kept in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (inv Gr14) (fig). This last one has been questioned in particular with the appearance of this purple gray that we also observe on our series. It was therefore submitted to the analysis of the C2RMF which confirmed that it belongs to the production of the sixteenth century. Bernard Descheemaeker associates the plate of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs with three others kept at the Wallace Collection in London (inv III F278) for the month of May, at the Wernher Collection, Ranger's House, London (inv 8259393/EE148) for the month of January and at the Grassi Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Leipzig (inv. 1925.013) for the month of April; as well as a fifth representing the month of January (Sotheby's sale 1978, lot 106). The latter is monogrammed P.R. and dated 1592. Pierre Reymond seems to have died around 1584. All of them, according to Bernard Descheemaeker's opinion, come from the same workshop, that of Pierre Reymond, but taken over by a successor and produced around 1590.
