LEMPICKA Tamara de (1898-1980)
Study for Girl at Window. Unsigned graphite drawing on paper, from a small sketchbook. Circa 1932. Slight folds. H: 13 cm - L. : 10 cm. This work is a preparatory drawing by the artist for the painting La jeune fille à la fenêtre, exhibited at the Tuileries in 1933, which is totally different from the final version of the painting. Here, the window is on the left, and the girl, lowered, looks down. Her hair curls are treated more naturally here than in the final painting, unlike her hands and arms, whose positions here are not anatomically realistic. The dress worn by the girl also differs from the final version, notably in the collar. On the reverse of the drawing is a handwritten pencil inscription; an appointment: "Rambosson, 6 rue de l'Orient en ... rue Lepic ... 7 Monday morning 9-12, Conti". Reference: see the representation of this work in the exhibition catalog "Tamara de Lempicka la Regina del Moderno", on show in Rome from March 11 to July 10, 2011, text by Gioia Mori, Skira edition, page 357. This work can be found in Alain Blondel's catalog raisonné of the artist, "Catalogue raisonné 1921-1979", published Lausanne, 1999, reproduced on page 471. This study was presented at the exhibition "Victor Manuel Contreras y Tamara de Lempicka - Un encuentro de dos culturas", at the Instituto Cultural Cabanas, Mexico, in 2012, page 63, as well as in the exhibition "Tamana de Lempicka" exhibition at the Bunkamura Museum of Art, Tokyo, 2010, page 157. Provenance: former collection of the Victor Contreras Foundation, this work was a gift from the artist to the latter.
