APSIT Alexandre Petrovitch, dit Aspid (1880-1944). Young woman in traditional Russian dress in a garden in springtime. Watercolor, graphite and gouache highlights on cardboard signed lower right by the artist in Cyrillic characters and dated (1)904, preserved under glass in a magnificent carved wooden frame with polychrome decoration depicting on the upper part a forest at sunset, on the sides branches of flowers and on the lower part a scene representing a fortified town surrounded by trees in the Art Nouveau style. Good condition. At sight :H. 60.5 cm - L. 28 cm. Frame:H. 83 cm - W. 51 cm. History :Alexandre Petrovitch Apsit, also known as Aspid or Apsidis, was a book and newspaper illustrator and poster artist. He is one of the most illustrious poster painters in the Baltic States and Russia. He worked in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Riga, as well as in Germany. In 1903 he became a member of the "Sreda" association, and from 1904 he began working with Sytine, Marx and Stoupine. He illustrated works by Tolstoy, Gorky, Chekhov, Leskov and many others. He was also one of the founders of the Moscow Society of Painters of Moscow. In 1919 he left Moscow for Latvia, then lived in Germany from Germany from 1939 until his death in 1944.
