LARGE PLATE WITH THE ARMS OF THE MARQUISE DE POMPADOUR. Moustier, 18th century. Earthenware, decorated in blue monochrome with the arms of Madame de Pompadour in the center, azure with three silver towers masoned sable, set 2 and 1 in a shield supported by two griffins and surmounted by a marquis crown, the wing decorated with garlands of flowers and foliage and a shell. H. 6 cm - Diam. 38.5 cm. Provenance: The inventory drawn up after Madame de Pompadour's death in 1764 lists a large number of earthenware pieces decorated with her coat of arms, notably at the Hôtel d'Evreux, now the Palais de l'Elysée. In one of the offices used as an earthenware factory, there are "sixteen dozen and four plates of blue and white fayance, with the arms of the late Dame de Pompadour; one hundred and fifty dishes of various shapes and sizes, aussy of blue and white fayance; eleven covered pots, of similar fayance; thirty-one jugs, also of blue and white fayance; thirteen refreshment buckets of similar fayance, a fountain and its bowl aussy of blue and white fayance". The inventory drawn up at Château de Ménars also mentions several earthenware jugs and water pots, along with bowls and bowls (Jean Cordey, Inventaire des biens de Madame de Pompadour après son décès, Paris, 1939, p. 34-35 and p. 191). Reference: An oval dish in Moustiers earthenware decorated with the Marquise de Pompadour's coat of arms is kept at the Musée de Sèvres and was presented at the exhibition Madame de Pompadour et les arts, Musée national des châteaux de Versailles et de Trianon, Paris. Versailles et de Trianon, February 14-May 19, 2002, catalog, Marie Laure de Rochebrune, n° 195, p. 465-466. A round dish was sold at Drouot on June 14, 2010 (Étude Robert, lot 75). An oval basin was sold at Drouot on March 18, 2016 (Étude Pescheteau-Badin, lot 217).
