DELAROCHE Paul (1797-1856).
Portrait of Anne of Austria. Oil on canvas, inscribed on the stretcher on the back "Paul Delaroche d'après Rubens". Beautiful 19th-century stuccoed and gilded wood channel frame (Repeints). Sight: H.: 110.50 cm - W.: 85 cm Frame: H.: 134 cm - W.: 108 cm. History: Rubens' original portrait of Anne of Austria is lost. It was probably a counterpart to Rubens' portrait of King Louis XIII, now in the Norton Simon collection in Pasadena. A version identical in composition to our painting is now in the Musée du Louvre, from the Collections de Louis XIV at Versailles until 1797. It is considered to be a copy of Rubens's portrait, which in the 18th century was misidentified as that of Marguerite de Valois. Marguerite de Valois- (cf INV 1794, on display in room 803, Richelieu wing, level 2). The inscription on the back of the painting provides a clue to this work, whose exceptional craftsmanship is compatible with Paul Delaroche's brushwork and historical romanticism.
