MIGNONNETTE DOLL BEARING THE EFFIGY OF EMPEROR... - Lot 76 - Coutau-Bégarie
MIGNONNETTE DOLL BEARING THE EFFIGY OF EMPEROR NAPOLEON. Head in polychrome bisque n°2, with fixed painted eyes and closed mouth, bisque hands. His clothes are original, with frock coat and uniform in tinted skin and black felt bicorne. The model we are presenting is rare in its size, and would have been one of Maison Jumeau's prototypes prior to its transfer to the S.F.B.J. company. At present, none of our research has found any other Napoleonic mignonette, hence the rarity of this one. Stains, as is, minor damage to hands, elastic band to be reassembled. H. 11.5 cm - L. 5 cm. History: since its creation in 1840, the Jumeau company has been booming. A 1st Universal Exhibition was set by Napoleon III on May 1, 1855, in honor of the forty years of peace after Waterloo. The Mignonettes all have a history. This one dates back to this period. Several trials were first made by this company, around 10-15 cm; but patented only in 1877, with larger sizes up to 20 cm by SFBJ - which took over. They owed their success to the Universal Exhibition of 1878.
