Nicolas Victor FONVILLE (1805-1856).
Scene of hunting at the lookout. Oil on panel. 21,3 x 26,7 cm. Signed and dated, lower right: Fonville 1833. On the back, label annotated by hand in the 19th century: Paysage de Fonville (de Lyon) Born in the Ain, Fonville moved to Lyon when his father died at the age of 15. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon under Antoine Duclaux and Augustin Thiérriat and spent a year in Rome in 1828-1829 with Antoine Guindrand. A friend of Charles Gleyre, Sébastien Cornu and Isidore Flacheron, he opened a school of landscape painting in 1831 where Alfred Bellet du Poisat, Louis-Hilaire Carrand, Louis Guy, Chevallier, Francisque Gabillot, Girardon, Gustave Karcher, Paul Saint-Olive and his son Horace Antoine Fonville, among others, were trained in "pleinairism".
