Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola (1871-1950)
Portrait of Jeanne Bertrand Pastel on paper, under glass 53,5 x 37 cm. Dedicated and signed, lower left: Souvenir à l'amie / Guirand de Scevola Dated lower right: 1917 On the back, annotations concerning the artist's biography, then: Jeanne Bertrand Our pastel, although done in 1917, has a melancholic mood and a dreamy palette, showing late Symbolist reminiscences in Guirand de Scevola's work, in a pose, framing, and costume that is reminiscent of his portrait of Sarah Bernhardt (1899, 54.5 × 37 cm, current location unknown, Rouillac sale, May 27, 1996, lot 432). There is a pastel portrait even closer in composition to the present one, formerly kept at Hasdpen House (Somerset, Great Britain), and sold with the title "Portrait of a Lady, Traditionally Identified with Sarah Bernhardt as Joan of Arc" (Sotheby's, 29 May 1996). The identity of the sitter of our portrait remains a mystery. Is Jeanne Bertrand related to Pierre Philippe Bertrand (1884-1975), a painter from Lorient, who served in the 136th Line during the First World War and whose portrait Paul Landowki reports having seen on November 27, 1919, "quite remarkable" in the studio of Guirand de Scevola? She was probably the subject, in 1916, of another portrait, more intimate, by Jacques Baugnies de Saint-Marceaux (next lot of the sale).
