Jean-François HUGUET (1679-1749)
The Cries of Paris, August 1743 Collection of 39 watercolor plates having for theme the itinerant merchants of Paris. In-12, 39. plates, contemporary binding in fawn calf, roulettes framed on the boards, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt flowers in small irons. Rare collection of 39 beautiful watercolors, about 11 x 17 cm, by Jean-François Huguet (1679-1749) annotated with a description in old French of auction sales such as the merchant of forgetfulness or the milk seller. (Tired binding, wormholes, some foxing and missing a description) The work of Jean-François Huguet was recently brought to light thanks to Madame Thaïs Arribard, co-curator of the exhibition on the artist at the Beaux-Arts de Rennes in 2016. Our collection was considered lost until now. It had been presented around 1900 to the curator of the time, Mr. Lucien Decombe (1834-1905) who instantly understood the patrimonial interest of this collection, ordering a copy from the renowned engraver Théodore Busnel (1843-1918). Numerous researches will highlight the fact that it was probably made during a stay in Italy, which leads us to believe that the commissioner would be Italian. Mrs. Arribard notes "that it had been in the possession of Canon Toullier de la Villemarie (1755-1837) [...] whose signature is found as a bookplate at the top of the title page. This is a real rediscovery of a collection that disappeared more than 100 years ago. Jean-François Huguet was an architect and draftsman from Rennes in the 18th century. Son of the architect and retabler, François Huguet, he probably did his apprenticeship with him. He built the Chapelle du Bon Pasteur in Rennes from 1719 to 1721. He collaborated with Jacques V Gabriel, the king's architect, for the Hôtel de Blossac. An outstanding draughtsman, he created an equestrian statue of Louis XIV in 1725 using a pen. He is known for having collaborated with Christophe-Paul de Robien and for having been a chronicler of Rennes life. In 2016, an exhibition retraced the career of this renowned artist at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes.
