Adoration of the Magi Oil on copper H.: 17,5 cm ; W.: 22,5 cm This scene of the adoration of the Magi is represented from the beginning of the Christian era, without representing the three kings whose names we know today. This evolution would only date from the 9th century. Our composition which could make think of a Flemish or Dutch staging, has a particularity which allows us to take it out of this axis. You will discover in the details a very strong work of sculpture, realized with a stylus or the point of wood of a brush. These lines sculpted in the paste of the paint give a very strong relief to this scene. The circular movement of the turbans, the shimmering reflections of the rich silks or the hair of Mary as well as those of one of the kings are worked in volutes. Rare by its origin as well as by its textures and colors, this copper panel presented in what seems to be its original frame, is a small jewel of religious art. Sold for the benefit of the Association Sauvegarde du retable de la Visitation (association under the law of 1901 eligible for tax reduction for donations and sponsorship) Created at the end of 2021, the association Sauvegarde du retable de la Visitation aims to support two rural communes of the Périgord (Beleymas and Montagnac la Crempse) in the restoration project of an altarpiece from the end of the 17th century. Initially installed in the church of the Visitation convent in Périgueux, this imposing altarpiece, a true masterpiece of Baroque art, was spared destruction when the convent was sold as national property during the Revolution and miraculously found its way to two modest rural churches in Périgord where it now appears in the form of several pieces. Classified as Historic Monuments, these pieces are in very poor condition and require urgent intervention. In liaison with the services of the DRAC, it was decided to proceed with a preliminary phase of studies in order to establish the appropriate recommendations for the final restoration. To this end, the association is currently seeking funding for the implementation of this phase from this year.
