Group of four carved wood sculptures in the round and polych - Lot 167
Group of four carved wood sculptures in the round and polychromed representing Christ praying in the garden of Gethsemane and the sleeping apostles; inscriptions HIH 73. Southern Germany or Northern Italy, late 17th / early 18th century H. 73 cm (very slight cracks) The Baroque period theatrically staged moments from the life of Christ in entire chapels. It is still common to see Nativities with large figures placed in niches above an altar in a side chapel, but also Christ carrying his cross for example. This group of sculptures was undoubtedly intended for this type of use and to allow the faithful to meditate on this moment of Christ's prayer in Gethsemane. A similar group is preserved in the chapel of the cemetery of Balschwiller (Haut-Rhin).
