Simone BARABINO (Valpolcevera, vers 1585 - vers 1620)
The Preaching of Saint Paul Canvas. (Restorations) 124 x 172 cm Related bibliography: Gian Vittorio Castelnovi, Gli eredi di Bernardo Castello e di Giovanni Battista Paggi in La pittura a Genova e in Liguria, vol. 2: "Dal Seicento al primo Novecento", Genoa, 1987, p. 59 and pp. 120-121. A painter of religious subjects, Simone Barabino, born in Genoa, trained with Bernardo Castello (c. 1545-1639). It was from the 1960s onwards that a corpus of his works was reconstructed, several of which, on canvas or fresco, are still in place in the churches of Genoa. He willingly introduced a multitude of characters into his scenes, figures in the foreground inviting the viewer to join them. Still borrowing from mannerism, he was an excellent colorist and attached great importance to the treatment of the hands and gestures. The acidulous and frank color of our painting reminds us of the activity of fresco artist of our artist. A copy of our painting was sold in Genoa (Cambi then Boeto) in 2008 and 2014 (canvas 133 x 165 cm).
