Saint Florian in carved, polychromed and... - Lot 70 - Coutau-Bégarie
Saint Florian in carved, polychromed and gilded limewood, with a hollowed back. Standing, pouring a bucket that he holds in his right hand, he is wearing a diamond-shaped cap with a turned-up edge, resting on a head of hair with twisted strands. He is dressed in armor and a cloak, one side of which returns to the front forming rounded folds. He is wearing shoes made of bear paws. South Tyrol, late 15th century H. 100.5 cm (accidents and slight missing parts) The locks of hair in this sculpture have their own originality. This way of twisting the line to create a curly appearance of the hair is found in the production of the Tyrol. We should mention a Saint Apostle from the altarpiece of Saint George, kept in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lille and coming from the church of Saint George an der Ahn near Bruneck (Italy) (fig),
