Benjamin SCHLICK (1796-1872)
Set of four watercolor drawings of elements of frescoes from Pompeii and Herculaneum. One decorated with a genius, another representing Cupid and a lion hunt by centaurs for the other two. Titled for all of them, two signed in the lower left corner, monogrammed BS under a comtal crown for the two others. All the frames in gilded brass with the inscription molded in the upper part Pompeii for three of them and Herculaneum for the fourth. Dim. at sight : 16 x 11 cm and 12 x 29 cm. Benjamin Gotthold Schlick was born in Copenhagen in 1796. Orphaned, he was adopted at the age of 11 by King Frederik II. He studied architecture in Copenhagen with the archaeologist Peter Bronsted, which awakened his taste for the antique style. He was in Paris as a student of Pierre-François-Léonard in 1825 and 1830. He went to Italy between 1831 and 1841 where he executed architectural views. He worked for more than 6 years in Pompeii. A very active and committed artist, he participated in numerous excavations. In 1849, M.A. Letronne, academician of Fine Arts wrote "The restoration made by the knight of Schlick [...] in the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum [...] shows a rare talent and a tireless perseverance". Renowned painter and draughtsman, he worked for many dignitaries and monarchs such as Frederik VI of Copenhagen, Charles X of France or Prince Nicolaï of Russia. He became a correspondent of the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris from 1825 to 1872, the year of his death.
