Portrait of a gentleman Important medallion in wood carved in high relief Diam. 78 cm and beautiful wooden frame decorated with laurel leaves : Diam. 98 cm It is in the Duchy of Lorraine, and thus in Nancy, its capital, that the main woodcarving workshops developed and prospered with César Bagard, the Foulons, Chassel, Vallier, Lupot, etc... The first objects made of wood were religious objects and later on small secular objects, but there are also larger-scale creations, some of which are signed, associated with César Bagard (1620-1709). Favored sculptor of Charles IV, Duke of Lorraine, he made a number of sculptures or religious panels, including a Last Supper (Burghley House, England), a St. John of the Cross (Musée lorrain de Nancy) or a statue of Georges d'Aubusson, Bishop of Metz.
