Large silver-plated, chased and embossed... - Lot 216 - Coutau-Bégarie
Large silver-plated, chased and embossed metal light reflector of oval shape topped by a crown of a sovereign Prince of the Holy Empire. The plate bordered by winged women pointing garlands of fruit, masks of bearded men and falls of scrolls. The central decoration depicts the victory over Protestantism of Emperor Charles of Habsburg, known as Charles V (1500-1558). He is depicted on his horse at the battle of Mühlberg crushing Elector John Frederick of Saxony (1532-1547) to the ground. The crown of the deposed elector is trampled by the winged lion of the evangelist Saint Mark symbolizing the superiority of the Christian tradition. German work of the 17th century, probably Augsburg. The decoration of our plate is inspired by the equestrian portrait commissioned by the emperor to Titian (1488-1576) in 1548 to celebrate and immortalize this victory (Portrait preserved in the Prado Museum in Madrid). H. 68 cm - L. 45 cm (missing the light arm, crown refixed, traces of oxidation, wear to the silvering)
