GENERAL LAFAYETTE Ivory skin glove with... - Lot 188 - Coutau-Bégarie
GENERAL LAFAYETTE Ivory skin glove with three double ribs, decorated with an engraved portrait of General Lafayette in a floral frame, captioned "THE FRIEND OF WAHINGTON". As is (largely disbound). Circa 1824. Accompanied by a handwritten bill signed by Lafayette: "You will see, my dear Mr. David (the sculptor David d'Angers), by the enclosed gazette that your letter so good for me arrived at the same time as the bust. It had passed through the presidency and the Senate and was going to be sent to the House of Representatives. Send me back the paper when you have read it and receive my very best regards. Lafayette" This glove is one of those given during Lafayette's triumphant visit to the United States in 1824, some of which were sent to the children and grandchildren of the "hero of both worlds". La Fayette corresponded with David d'Angers about busts of Washington and Jefferson around 1827-1829. David d'Angers made, in April 1829, a bust of the general and offered it to the United States government. This bust was destroyed in 1851 in the Capitol fire.
