Ecole de Modène, entourage de Sante Peranda (1566-1638)
Presumed portrait of a princess of the House of Este, probably Laura (1594-1630), wife of Alessandro I Pico della Mirandola (1566-1637) Oil on canvas 71.2 x 60 cm. On the edge, red wax stamp with the arms of the Duchy of Modena and Reggio (XIX century) On the frame, handwritten annotations in graphite, very difficult to read: "Laura ... 12 Mag. 1843... di Cavalli Sforza..." A Venetian, a pupil of Palma the Younger, Peranda, in addition to his religious and historical paintings, is known for his portraits painted between 1608 and 1627 of the members of the ducal court of Mirandola, located between Modena and Mantua, the fief of the Pico family. The Picos forged prestigious matrimonial alliances with their powerful neighbors: Alessandro (1566-1637), a highly esteemed warlord, married Laura d'Este in 1607, daughter of Caesar (1562-1628), Duke of Modena and Reggio, and granddaughter, through her mother, of Cosimo de Medici (1519-1574), Grand Duke of Tuscany. This strategic alliance allowed the Pico family to increase its social prestige. The birth of four daughters tested the princess Laura who had inherited - from her Medici ancestry - a fragile mental health. An appreciated sovereign, patron of the arts, and of great elegance (her portraits in the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua bear witness to this), she was killed by an epidemic of plague in 1630 when the rural population of the duchy took refuge in the city from the imperial troops devastating the countryside following the War of the Mantuan Succession.
