École Française du XVIIIème siècle, suiveur d'Edme Bouchardon
Louis XV on horseback Sculpture in carved and gilded wood H. : 75 cm - L. : 48 cm - D. : 22 cm (small damages, restorations) On June 27, 1748, the City of Paris proposed to honor the victorious king of the War of the Austrian Succession (1741-1748) by erecting a statue "in the location that His Majesty will deem appropriate to determine" and commissioned the sculptor Edme Bouchardon (1698-1762) to create the monument. At the same time, the members of the Academy of Architecture were working to provide plans for a royal square, the current Place de la Concorde, to house the king's figure. The proposal to build this square on the esplanade of the Pont-Tournant, located outside the city, between the Champs-Élysées promenade and the Tuileries garden, attracted attention. The sovereign quickly approved the sketch of the equestrian monument presented by the sculptor, and the first stone was laid in 1754. It represents Louis XV "à la romaine", crowned with laurel, like a peaceful prince, calmly entering the capital of his kingdom.
