Suite of eight chairs in molded beech wood... - Lot 166 - Coutau-Bégarie
Suite of eight chairs in molded beech wood and grey relacquered, the back of scalloped form, the belt moved and the feet slightly arched. Louis XV period, three stamped N.D FOLIOT (two with the mark TS) and two stamped TILLARD. Covered with crimson embossed velvet. H. 92 cm or H. 94 cm Nicolas-Quinibert Foliot (1706-1776), received master in 1729, is part of an important dynasty of carpenters who distinguished themselves in the service of the Garde-Meuble of the crown for over forty years. The Tilliards also form a famous dynasty of carpenters who began under the aegis of Jean Baptiste I Tilliard (1685-1766), who set up his store "Aux armes de France" on rue de Cléry in Paris, right next to his brother Nicolas, and who became "ordinary carpenter of the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne" around 1730. He notably supplied the Palace of Versailles between 1737 and 1739. He retired from business in 1764, leaving the place to his son Jean-Baptiste II Tilliard (1723-1798), received master in 1752, who took back his title of carpenter of the Crown and his stamp. It is worth noting that Louis XV had very similar models for all his dining rooms, the degree of richness of which varied not so much from one residence to another but according to their place in the distribution desired by the etiquette. Four chairs stamped by Nicolas Quinibert Foliot and François Foliot (1720-1761) are preserved in Paris at the Mobilier National (inv. GME 1650/1; inv. GME 1650/4; inv. GME 10892 and inv. P 206/2 - Reference: Louis XV à Fontainebleau : La demeure des rois au temps des lumières by Vincent Droguet, p. 168 and 169)
