NIEUWERKERKE Alfred Emilien de (1811-1892). Equestrian... - Lot 199 - Coutau-Bégarie
NIEUWERKERKE Alfred Emilien de (1811-1892). Equestrian statue of King Henry IV, wearing a Caesar's headdress and armor. Very beautiful bronze, finely sculpted with brown patina and green shade, signed on the terrace by the artist: "Cte E. de Nieuwerkerke", taking over the statue erected on the place du Pont- Neuf in Paris in 1818. The latter replaced the one realized by Giambologna and Pietro Tacca in 1635 and destroyed during the French Revolution. This bronze rests on a beautiful rectangular base in black and red marble. French work, 19th century. H. 56 cm - L. 36 cm - D. 21,5 cm. Provenance : this work was offered by the prince of Joinville (1818-1900), to his granddaughter, the princess Marie d'Orléans (1865-1909), on the occasion of her marriage with the prince Waldemar of Denmark (1858-1939), celebrated at the castle of Eu on October 22, 1885. This work can be seen in the main salon of the Yellow Palace Yellow Palace in Copenhagen, the Danish residence of the princely couple, as can be seen in the attached photograph, on the right in front of the window. It was then transmitted by succession to Prince Axel of Denmark (1888-1964), who married Princess Margareth of Sweden (1899-1977) on May 22, 1919.
