History: Christian Guillaume de Faber du Faur (1780-1857), returned in 1809 to the royal army of Württemberg, he participated in the Russian campaign within the 25th division of the IIIrd corps of Marshal Ney's army, he participated in the Russian campaign (in the 2nd battery of Württemberg foot artillery. In August 1812, in Smolensk, he received the Legion of Honor, then the Royal Cross. Faber du Faur became a major in 1819, lieutenant-colonel in 1836, colonel in 1840, general in 1849. He was an eyewitness to the scenes depicted, sketched on the spot from day to day. These beautiful lithographs are of an extraordinary realism and form the most vivid and precious document we have on the campaign and the retreat from Russia. In 1816, a hundred of his drawings of the Russian Campaign were exhibited for the first time. The publisher Christian Autenrieth, in 1827, proposed to publish a series of them. In 1829, the first edition was colored. We assume that our copy is from the 2nd edition.
