Dutch edition of one of the most beautiful books of botany, the Phytanthoza iconographia... (1737-1745). Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683-1741), apothecary and botanist from Regensburg, called upon several editors and illustrators to publish this dictionary of plants (flowers and fruits). The Dieterichs father and son and later A. K. Bieler wrote the notes while Georg Dionys Ehret (1708-1770), one of the most important botanical artists of the 18th century, drew the first 500 plates, engraved by Bartholomew Seuter (1678-1754), Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767) or Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767). The beautiful illustration is engraved in color using the mezzotint process. It includes a frontispiece, after Baumgartner, and two portraits (J.W.Weinmann and A.K.Beiler) after M.C.Hirschmann, engraved by J.J.Haid and printed in blue, at the head of the first volume. Four volumes contain the 1025 plates of plants and fruits, of which 15 folded, watercolored and gummed. Large headband drawn and engraved by Gottlieb Jacob Marstaller, at the head of the dedication to the Prince of Orange. A nice copy with stains on about a hundred plates, small wormholes on some plates. Two plates torn without missing. Damage to the covers.
