Unique edition of this sumptuous work, complete with 448 plates, finely colored and gummed, lithographed after the author by his wife Elizabeth Coxen Gould and, for 67 plates, by the great illustrator and ornithologist Edward Lear. These famous plates were printed, probably in less than 300 copies, on the presses of Ch. J. Hullmandel, the master British lithographer of his time. "Remarkable for the owls and cranes drawn by Edward Lear" (Fine bird books). A very nice copy. Usual light spotting. Title leaf of the first volume disbound. Covers, spines and corners slightly rubbed. Lower spine of volumeIII very fragile with a tiny lack.
