Vogelbuch... Zürich, Christoph Froschauer, 1581. In-folio, 23 x 37,5cm, [6] ff. 261 ff. in ivory sow skin binding dated 1586, cold-stamped title on the first board, plate in the center of the boards and framing historiated scrolls, cold-stamped, spine ribbed, traces of binding. Second edition in German of this famous ornithological encyclopedia published in Latin in 1555. The woodcut illustration, attributed in part to Lucas Schan from Strasbourg, includes 219 bird figures. "Considered the basis of modern zoology" (Horblit. One hundred books famous in science, 39). A good copy entirely colored in old cold-stamped vellum from the Benedictine abbey of Weingarten (Baden-Wurtenberg) and later from its daughter the abbey of Hofen (Baden-Wurtenberg), with handwritten notes on the title. Engraved heraldic wood on the reverse of the title, which does not appear in all copies. Beige fading around the watercolor wood. Small defects without gravity to some leaves.
