S.AUGUSTIN
The city of God... Paris, Nicolas Pepie, 1701. 2 vol. in-8, 12,5 x 19cm, 20 ff., 732 pp. & 738 pp. 9 ff, contemporary binding in olive morocco, large gilt lace on the boards, ribbed spine decorated with gilt motifs, red morocco parts, gilt inner lace, gilt paper endpapers, gilt edges. Translation by the lawyer Pierre Lombert, illustrated with 22 historiated woodcuts (some repeated). A fine copy in a lace morocco binding attributable to Luc-Antoine Boyet, the king's bookbinder from 1698 until his death in 1733. The copy comes from the library of Philippe d'Orléans (1640-1701), brother of Louis XIV. It was given at his death to the convent of the Visitation of Chaillot, according to a note of the xviii century on a white guard: "This book is of the monastery of the Visitation Ste Marie of Chaillot, given by M. the duke of Orleans. From the library of the late His Royal Highness." The library was dispersed during the Revolution and the copy passed through the libraries of the bibliographer Jacques-Charles Brunet, 1780-1867 (according to the La Roche Lacarelle catalog record), the baron de la Roche Lacarelle, 1816-1887 (bookplate, sale Paris, Porquet, 1888, n°35, binding attributed to Padeloup), of Robert and Jeanne Percheron (engraved bookplate) and of Baron Alain de Rothschild (bookplate, sale Paris, Sotheby's, 24May 2006, n°4, part of the lot). Covers of volume I are fragile.
