KREMLIN SERVICE FOR TSAR NICOLAS I. - Lot 435
KREMLIN SERVICE FOR TSAR NICOLAS I. Imperial Manufactory, St. Petersburg, 1825-1855. Hard porcelain soup plate with polychrome painted decoration of fir trees and stylized vegetal motifs on a gold background. Wear, as is. Blue marks on the reverse : HI (Nicolas I), under imperial crown. Diameter : 23,5 cm. History : this pot was made during the reign of Emperor Nicholas II (1894-1917), to complete the magnificent Kremlin service ordered in 1836 by his ancestor, Emperor Nicholas I (1796-1855), to the Imperial Porcelain Factory of Saint Petersburg. The decoration was designed by the painter Feodor Solntsev (1801-1892), a great connoisseur of ancient Russian art. He was inspired by various motifs found in Russian medieval art, directly borrowed from the enameled gold plates made by the Kremlin workshops in 1667 for Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich. This service was regularly used in the Kremlin Palace during coronations, diplomatic evenings and large banquets in honor of the cadets of the imperial army.
